Dưới thời Pháp thuộc Sa Đéc được xem là thị trấn nhỏ, yên tĩnh ở đồng bằng sông Cửu Long.Tên nó có nguồn gốc từ tiếng Khơ Me Psar Dèk. Nay Sa Déc thuộc về tỉnh Đồng Tháp. Chính đây là vùng Tây Nam Bộ, nơi có được một bức tranh văn hóa đa sắc với bốn tộc chính là người Việt, Khơ Me, Hoa và Chăm. Chính cũng nơi nầy có một chuyện tình lãng mạn, không hồi kết cuộc của một chàng trai người Việt gốc Hoa Huỳnh Thủy Lê cùng cô con gái người Pháp lúc còn thiếu niên, trở thành nhà văn hào Pháp nổi tiếng về sau với tên Marguerite Duras qua quyển sách « Người Tình » của bà, được giải thưởng Goncourt 1984 và đã được chuyển thể thành phim và dịch ra 42 thứ tiếng. Nay chỉ còn dấu ấn của Huỳnh Thủy Lê qua ngôi nhà cổ của ông được xếp hạng là di sản lịch sử của đất nước.

Durant la période coloniale française, Sa Đéc était considérée comme une petite ville tranquille du delta du Mékong. Son nom est dérivé du mot khmer Psar Dek. Sa Déc appartient désormais à la province de Đồng Tháp. Il s’agit de la région du Sud-Ouest de la Cochinchine, où l’on retrouve un tableau culturel multicolore avec quatre groupes ethniques principaux : les Vietnamiens, les Khmers, les Chinois et les Cham. C’est également ici que se déroule une histoire d’amour romantique sans fin entre un Vietnamien d’origine chinoise Huỳnh Thủy Lê et une adolescente française, qui deviendra plus tard une célèbre écrivaine nommée Marguerite Duras grâce à son best-seller intitulé « L’Amante » ayant remporté le prix Goncourt en 1984 et ayant été adapté en film et traduit en 42 langues. Aujourd’hui il ne reste que la trace de Huỳnh Thủy Lê grâce à sa vieille maison classée désormais comme le patrimoine historique du Vietnam.

During the French colonial period, Sa Đéc was considered a quiet small town in the Mekong Delta. Its name is derived from the Khmer word Psar Dek. Sa Đéc now belongs to Đồng Tháp province. It is located in the Southwest region of Cochinchina, where a colorful cultural tableau can be found with four main ethnic groups: the Vietnamese, the Khmers, the Chinese, and the Cham. It is also here that an endless romantic love story unfolds between a Vietnamese of Chinese origin, Huỳnh Thủy Lê, and a French teenage girl, who later became a famous writer named Marguerite Duras thanks to her bestseller titled « The Lover » which won the Goncourt Prize in 1984 and was adapted into a film and translated into 42 languages. Today, only the trace of Huỳnh Thủy Lê remains thanks to his old house, now classified as a historical heritage site of Vietnam.
